Demographic and social changes are causing increased demand for development land and there is great pressure on the planning system to allocate suitable sites for housing and jobs. The reclamation of brownfield land provides an effective bridge between the demand for new development land and the very public hostility to works encroaching on greenfield sites and the countryside.
